Here at Mom Prepares we’ve talked a lot about making your own yogurt.
My family eats a lot of yogurt for breakfasts but my favorite reason to make yogurt? To cook with! I’ve learned to substitute yogurt for milk, sometimes adding a little water to thin it, or using less flour.
Breads especially benefit from the tangy flavor of yogurt. You can also make things like cheeses and dips with yogurt.
Since yogurt keeps very well, is wonderful for your health and is a lot easier on you digestive system than regular milk, cooking with it seems like a smart idea and us preppers are all about shelf-life and health!
If you haven’t started using yogurt yet, today’s the day! If you’re not sure where to start, well, here you go.
Recipes That Use Yogurt: You’ve Got to Try These!
Erica’s Favorite Whole Wheat Biscuits – This is my own original recipe, published at UntrainedHousewife.com. Its the recipe I make at least once a week and my family gobbles them up, even without butter. They’re good hot, cold, with jam or with gravy. For a whole wheat recipe, these are the closest thing you’ll find to grandma’s unhealthy, flaky, lard and white flour recipe.
Easy Chocolate Yogurt Cookies – My friend, Amy of TasteLikeCrazy.com, got me hooked on these. I made them the day after she posted the recipe and we ate them up so fast! They’re soft and chewy like brownies and a lot less messy. I even added my own variation to a few of them by pressing a mint filled chocolate kiss into the top of them while they were warm. Heavenly. The yogurt adds a little bit of zip to the cookie and while it’s something I wouldn’t have thought to try on my own, it’s now one of my favorite recipes!
Greek Yogurt Pancakes – This 5 ingredient pancake recipe promises to be moist and rich. While I haven’t tried this particular recipe, I have used yogurt in my own pancake adventures and I love it. If you don’t have buttermilk just water down some yogurt! You’ll get that wonderful texture and flavor, and they’ll be good for you too! Recipe and Image credit: RecipeGirl.com
White Yogurt Cornbread – CookingOnTheSide.com shares this beautiful white quickbread made with yogurt and white corn. Fluffy, moist and the perfect side to your chili or soup!
