It makes sense that a majority of preppers keep at least one weapon in their home. That’s what we do – we prepare to protect ourselves and our families from threats, whether it be a power outage or someone breaking into our home.
If you keep a weapon in your home, it is so important for each family member to know and understand the risks involved with having weapons. Many parents have a weapon and think that they can hide it from their children but that is not the best answer. I believe that it’s more important that you make your children understand WHY they should never touch or play with guns and educate them to respect a weapon for what it is from an early age.
Kids and Guns: Safety is in Knowledge
Children shouldn’t be scared of guns, and they shouldn’t see them as an elusive “no no.” Instead, they should know that they are dangerous, that they are there to keep your family safe and that really, their friends don’t even need to know that there is a gun in your home. Most of all, it is extremely important to make sure that if your child ever finds or sees a gun (or another child playing with one), he should back away and go find an adult to tell. Children (big and small) must understand that guns are not toys. Ever.
Once your kids are aware of the dangers of playing with guns, educate yourself about all the other safety features that you can use to improve gun safety in your home.
