If you are planning an event on a homestead or in a country setting I recommend you check out this book. Prairie Style Weddings: Rustic and Romantic Farm, Woodland, and Garden Celebrations by Fifi O’Neill is filled with ideas of ways to dress up a barn, stable, or even just a field for a celebration.
When I pulled this book out of the envelope I actually said, “It’s beautiful!” The book itself is beautiful and that’s partly because it is full of gorgeous pictures. My daughter and I loved just sitting and looking through the pages.
Best of all it sparked ideas in my mind. Many times I thought, “I could do that!” The author loves to use thrifty items; she uses wire hangers, horseshoes, scraps of lace, etc. She also repurposes many things; boards across hay bales become a table, harnesses become a wall decoration, metal buckets filled with sand become candle holders, old boots become vases, water troughs get filled with ice to hold drinks, and more! Pieces of lace on the table or tucked among the flowers add some elegance amidst the rough barn wood. There is a section in the back with step by step instructions on how to make some of the decorations.

Another major player is nature itself; she not only uses flowers, grasses, and vines in the decorations- she incorporates the surroundings into the overall effect by working with nature and not against it. There are many ways to use herbs that bring beauty to the setting as well as practical things like nice scents or bug repellants. She hangs the herbs from a tree branch over the main table, from horse shoes along the wall, on the door, or in an empty frame. Long, sturdy tree branches are used as tent poles. Chairs or benches are set up to take the best advantage of the leafy canopy or the view of the pond. Don’t have a ceiling? No problem, you can hang the chandelier from a tree.
