The term ‘Dutch oven’ was coined more than 300 years ago. Although the term originally referred to the large cast iron cooking pots hung over fires or buried and hot ashes, manufacturers create an assortment of beautifully colored Dutch ovens sold today. Whether you cook over a fire or on a stove, you might find one of the following Dutch oven recipes to be extremely valuable! Dig through your prepper pantry of ingredients and enjoy!
Red Pepper & Garlic Bread – Marks Black Pot
I love the bloggy feel to these recipes. It’s like having someone discuss the recipe with you as you go, instead of providing a single list of ingredients and telling you how to put them together. I bet using the recipe I made crockpot bread with would turn out just as tasty.
Quiche, Pizza, & Lasagna – Tiny Yellow Teardrop
This is a great collection of a lot of meals I love and all for making in a Dutch oven. A few of the links connect to videos, which I enjoy immensely, since I’m more of a visual person and like to see how things are done.
Love your dutch oven? We love ours too, and we can never get enough recipes for campfire cooking! The Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook looks like a fabulous resource!
Dutch Oven Ribs – I Wash…you Dry
Ribs are one of my husband’s favorite meat products, so I was stoked when I found a Dutch oven recipe for them! What an excellent camping meal. The step by step pics on this particular recipe are great as well.
Brownies – Everyday Dutch Oven
Although this recipe seems to be made in an enamel-coated Dutch oven indoors, I bet it could be used in a traditional cast iron one as well. I’ve provided a link at the bottom of the page for temp regulation with coals to help with modifying this recipe, if you’d like to try it outdoors.
Braised Beef & Dessert – Pocket Ranger Blog
An excellent meal for camp combined with a choice of strawberry cobbler or cinnamon rolls for dessert. It all looks so yummy! The author of these recipes offers suggestions for what to prepare at home, if you chose to take these meals camping as well. Great info!
Seafood Jambalaya – Scouting Magazine
While there are a number of other Dutch oven recipes on this site, I thought the Jambalaya sounded the tastiest. Talk about a filling dish for a large group. Of course it’s an easy recipe to alter too, in case you aren’t a huge fan of crawfish, shrimp, or crab.

Cooking With Cast Iron
Cowboy Stew – Dutch Oven Dude
This sounded like the perfect recipe to use if you are in need of rotating some of your stockpile, since it uses potatoes and cans of beans, tomato products, and corn. It certainly is an easy recipe to follow and great for pouring over cornbread.
