One of my favorite resources for information on sustainable living, homesteading, preparedness, and more is The Backyard Homestead by Carleen Madigan. I have found this book to be an invaluable resource in planning how we can grow more of our own food with the resources we have.
The concept behind this book is utilizing your land to its maximum potential. With a little planning and hardwork, the Backyard Homestead can help you plan your land to provide a large portion of the food for your family.
Planning Your Backyard Homestead
Madigan starts by encouraging readers to really think about their property, their neighbors, local laws, and what goals they might have for their farm. One of the best parts of this chapter is the diagrams. I found the detailed sketches of possible growing beds for 1/10, 1/4 and 1/2 an acre to be not only encouraging but also doable, even if someone wants to start small with just a few beds and then expand later. The sketches give readers an idea of how to lay out their beds for later expansion
Getting More From Your Garden and Other Homesteading Chapters
The next section, Getting More From the Garden, takes planning to the next step. Gardeners have to understand which plants work best next to each other and also the concept of crop rotation. This section clearly lays this all out in practical, easy to understand terms.
Later chapters offer excellent information on individual vegetables as well as fruit bearing trees and vines and nuts. Madigan includes a variety of recipes using the garden varieties. She also discusses growing grains, raising chickens and other livestock.
Going Further: Raising Livestock, Processing Meat, Raising Bees
The Backyard Homestead also includes valuable chapters on processing your own meat, making sausage and making cheese as well as raising bees and foraging from the wild. This book is a handy book for anyone who wants to learn more about growing their own food. Even if you’re not interested in raising your own meat, you can glean very useful information from The Backyard Homestead.
