It’s no secret that we have too much junk in our homes. For many of us, we’ve become borderline hoarders without a clue of what to do or where to start.
As a mom I struggle like the rest of you. Baby brain, lack of sleep, what’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner and…
Too. Much. Stuff.
According to the census bureau, the average person moves 6 times by age 30. That’s a whole lot of stuff that can amass over time, especially with kids.
From all the clothes that just won’t fit, to household knick-knacks we’ll never use, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and to get caught up in a cycle of “I’ll tackle it all…tomorrow.”
While there’s a gazillion tips and articles out there on how to declutter and achieve a zen-like state (yeah right!) – I’m writing you, fellow mom and friend about something that actually works.
Seven months ago, I stumbled upon a local buy, sell, and trade app that’s changed my life. Literally. I no longer feel paralyzed by the mountain of unused stuff lying around my home.
Not being one to keep good news to myself – here it is: You can achieve your decluttering goals by selling your stuff online for free, locally and with peace of mind.
Meet Tami Zuckerman, Chief Mom and Founder of VarageSale – the new, hip “virtual” garage sale site that allows you to declutter your home, earn extra cash and have fun all at the same time.
Like others, Tami had experienced her share of scams and creepy stranger danger that would turn anyone off from reaching their “clutter for cash” goals.
She teamed up with her web developer hubby and together completely revolutionized “buying and selling” for millions around the globe.
VarageSale offers a personable, hassle-free, safe alternative to existing online platforms like Craigslist and eBay Classifieds.
Here’s what they had to say in a recent interview featured in the Financial Post:
Trust, safety and community are at the centre of everything we do…
It’s identities, real names, real people.
And for moms like us, this is huge.
No more clutter-ful, user-unfriendly lists like these:
And no more “heebie-jeebies” felt from buying and selling your stuff, like these:
VarageSale makes it safe and simple.
With their user-friendly app and visually stunning content, anyone can sell online within minutes. You’ll rediscover sacred space in your home and earn a ton of cash while you’re at it.
Want proof? Me!
Within 6 months of joining, little ol’ me:
- got rid of my junk.
- earned hundreds of dollars that got put toward necessities for my family.
- felt rewarded knowing my “trash” became someone else’s fine “treasure”.
From one mom to another, here’s how you can achieve the same great results or better.
All it takes are 7 glory filling steps and a fun buy and sell app with a cute little name. Let’s get down to the nitty gritty of VarageSale.
1. Sign-Up and Join Your Local Community
Enter your zip code on the VarageSale homepage to find your local community.
Local communities are like your virtual neighborhoods. VarageSale identifies which ones are closest to you geographically and sends you a list like the one below for you to choose from.
By selecting “Visit Community” you can learn more about the buy and sell virtual neighborhood before making a decision to join one.
Once you’ve found a posse that fits your style, select “Join My Community.”
You can maximize your opportunity to earn cash by joining more than one community. Being willing to buy and sell in nearby communities instantly widens your territory and opportunity for a winning deal. You just never know who might turn up to claim your trash as their treasure.
When prompted, sign up safely and privately using your Facebook account.
You’ll arrive on a landing page similar to the one below for each community joined.
Select “Ask to Join” and wait for a welcome message from the local community group admin, confirming your membership.
2. Showcase your Stuff
Once you’ve officially been accepted as a new member of your local communities, start the process of selling your stuff by clicking “Post Items.”
Upload as many pictures of your items as you want by selecting “Upload Photos.”
Make sure your photos are crystal clear without clutter showing in the background.
Even better, take shots of your items against plain or staged backgrounds and enhance your images using built-in auto-filters on your smartphone.
This extra effort could be all the difference in getting it sold, and fast.
Your pictures will appear in windows similar to the ones below.
Add any additional photos showing different angles in the comments section of your post for even faster sales.
3. Quick Sales are in the Details
Each uploaded image prompts you to complete simple fields such as:
- Category (i.e. clothing, furniture or baby item etc.)
- Description (optional)
Include brand names, sizes and other details like dimensions for best results. Buyers want to know as much as possible about their item of interest.
For example, if you’re selling a dining table, you might want to add that it’s made of solid wood or the length of the decorative mirror is 2 feet. By including these details from the beginning, it will save you time from answering questions later.
Oh, and include retail prices on brand-new tagged items. This highlights their savings and everyone loves a steal of a deal.
Once you’re done filling in the fields, click “Submit Items”
Unfamiliar with “buy and sell” lingo, like “BNIB” (Brand New in Box) or “EUC” (Excellent Used Condition)?
VarageSale makes it easy for you by decoding commonly used terms here.
4. Manage Your Stuff Like a Pro
After you’ve submitted your items, you’ll be able to view and manage your listings in “My Stuff.”
VarageSale has super-easy categories to buy and sell stuff, like:
- Clothing for the whole family (tops, bottoms, outerwear)
- Baby items (gear, nursery, feeding)
- Handmade/ craft items
- Home (furniture, décor, lighting etc.)
Your “My Stuff” will help you navigate your items, by grouping them by category. Genius!
Here’s a live example of items under baby gear:
And clothes for women by size and type:
VarageSale’s universal category system is the same for all communities, making it a seamless experience whether you’re buying or selling.
5. “Reserve” it before you Seal the Deal
Now that your items are posted, it won’t be long before someone within your community shows interest in buying. Yippee!
When this happens, you’ll get a message from the buyer letting you know that they’re interested.
After coordinating the details for pick-up, simply click “Reserve” on the posted item.
This will automatically show that the item is now “on reserve” and unavailable for other potential buyers. Snooze you lose, y’know?
VarageSale uses the basic traffic light colors to make it easier to track your stuff at a glance.
- green (available)
- yellow (reserved)
- red (sold)
6. Done Deal? Mark it as Sold
Once a reserved item sells and the transaction is complete, you’re ready to edit your item.
Mark the item as “Sold” and do your happy dance. Cha-CHING. Cash in your pocket.
7. “Praise” for Positive Experiences
Once your item is marked as sold (and you catch your breath from all that dancing), you’ll be automatically prompted to leave feedback for the buyer.
They call it “praise.”
Unlike other local buying and selling sites, VarageSale provides the opportunity to give public comments about the person you’re dealing with.
Getting positive praises is the adult version of getting gold star stickers. It makes you feel good and motivates you to keep going. So, keep going!
Making the most of every encounter can lead to achieving Top Member status (quality items with a hassle-free experience). VarageSale recognizes members who consistently meet a set of easy requirements like completing 5 transactions and receiving 1 praise per month.
So smile and have fun and you can earn premium dollars for things you would have thrown out otherwise.
It’s really that simple.
Rinse and repeat for all of your unused belongings using VarageSale’s local buy and sell app.
In a season of setting goals and making new commitments, now you really can begin decluttering the entire contents of your home.
Who knows? The end result could pay for your next family vacation or well-deserved treasure of your own.
Great job mama! **praise**.
