Summary:

This is an in-depth review of the Avocado Green mattress. See how it stacks up against the competition and if it is a mattress you should buy.

A lot of companies slap “all-natural” or “green” on products to expand their market without actually putting in the work to meet the needs of their health and eco-conscious customer base. We see it everywhere, with food, cosmetics, clothing, etc.

The mattress industry does not escape this shameful marketing tactic. Which is why I’m excited to review Avocado Green Mattresses. You can rest assured that these mattresses are as organic as they say they are. Pun totally intended.

What are Avocado Mattresses made of?

Avocado Mattresses are made with upcycled steel coils and three organic materials:

100% GOLS organic certified latex rubber foam from sustainably harvested sources. It’s highly resilient and durable, replacing what would be synthetic, blended, or petroleum-based polyurethane foams used in other mattresses.

GOTS organic certified wool. The wool wicks away moisture and acts as a fire barrier. It’s antimicrobial, which keeps the mattress fresh, and is resistant to dust mites as well. Working with the organic latex it offers natural temperature control.

GOTS organic certified cotton is free of polyester and one of the softest, most breathable cottons out there.

How are Avocado Mattresses structured?

Avocado offers both standard and pillowtop mattresses.

The top layer is a soft cotton cover with hand-tufted Joma wool rosettes. The tufting is a centuries-old practice that replaces toxic solvents and adhesives.

Directly under the cover is two inches of 100% latex foam. If you opt for the pillowtop mattress, yours will have four inches of latex instead of two.

The third layer contains 1,414 upcycled steel coils, in three gauges, and arranged in five ergonomic zones. It’s designed to maximize edge support and keep motion transfer at a minimum. That way no one will wake their partner getting up in the middle of the night!

There are also two handles on each side, making it easier to move the considerably heavy mattress.

The material composition of an Avocado boasts temperature neutrality, giving you a cooler sleep.

On a scale of 1-10, with ten being the firmest, Avocado mattresses have a firmness rating of 6 to 7.

They’re ideal for back and stomach sleepers. If you’re a side sleeper like me, Avocado recommends the pillowtop mattress.

What certifications do Avocado Mattresses have?

Greenguard Gold Certified, meaning they meet UL environment’s standards for low chemical exposure and pollutants, including VOCs, formaldehyde, and phthalate.

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) means that their cotton and wool are both organic and ethically sourced.

Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) promises that the latex in Avocado mattresses contain more than 95% of certified organic raw material. They actually source their latex from a co-owned processing facility in India, which operates under the USDA National Organic Program.

Climate Neutral. Avocado earned this certification by being “the world’s first mattress brand to achieve net-zero carbon emissions.”

OEKO-TEX certifies that the materials are free from allergenic dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and chloro-organic carriers, with a non-harmful pH.

Vegan Certified and PETA Approved. Avocado offers vegan mattresses, which replaces the wool with extra cotton.

MADE SAFE certifies the mattresses are free of toxins, flame retardant materials, pesticides, carcinogens, harmful VOCs, and endocrine disruptors.

Finally, Avocado is partnered with 1% for the Planet, the Organic Trade Association, Green America, the USGBC, the Sustainable Furnishings Council, Carbonfund, DoneGood, and We’re Still In.

How is sleeping on an Avocado Mattress?

Avocado Green Mattress Sleep

I received the Queen pillowtop mattress and two pillows. After trying out the mattress for a month, I’m hooked.

I have a lot of neck and back problems from a car accident, and I noticed a huge reduction in my pain waking up. My husband, who’s a much sounder sleeper, prefers this mattress too.

We love the pillows, which are made of many small pieces of foam. They’re the perfect level of firmness.

Not too hard like many memory foam pillows, but not as soft and unsupportive as down. They’re the best of both worlds.

Overall, I’m incredibly happy with our new Avocado. I had been doing so much research to find a toxin-free mattress. It’s really hard to find something comfortable that isn’t full of petroleum-based foam or flame retardant materials. This mattress honestly blew my expectations away.

How much do they cost?

A Queen-size Avocado mattress costs $1,399.00. The vegan option costs the exact same! The pillow top version will cost you an extra $240.00 to $500.00, depending on the mattress size.

As far as hybrid and eco-friendly mattresses go, this is a very competitive price.

Avocado offers a 25-year warranty, as well as a risk-free one year trial.

Shipping is free, but for an extra $199.00, the company will deliver and unbox your mattress personally, as well as take your old one away. I would highly recommend this to anyone who doesn’t have an extra set of hands at home, because it was super heavy and difficult to get up the stairs!

In my experience the shipping was impressively quick too!

Final Thoughts About Avocado Green Mattress

Mattresses are one of the most overlooked items when it comes to detoxifying our homes. I know it’s easy to put off replacing because quality mattresses are a considerable investment. But when you think about the fact that we spend a third of our lives on one mattress, it’s definitely worth it to spend the extra money on one that is free of toxins, chemicals, and dangerous materials. Both price and comfort wise, Avocado is an excellent option.
