I’m a pretty simple girl that loves simple Christmas decorations. I don’t “do” a lot of tchotchkes (knick-knacks) in our house but I do love to decorate for Christmas. God has given us so many beautiful things just outside our door that make wonderful decorations for Christmas and winter. Simple, rustic Christmas decorations can easily be carried over into the late winter, and don’t have to come down right away.
These simple pieces of natural beauty that I bring into our home each year keep me grounded. They remind me of what Christmas is really about and they remind me to just slow down and enjoy the season. Simple doesn’t have to mean ugly or cheap. It can be beautiful and meaningful, and the gathering of these natural decorations will make memories with your family that will last a lifetime.
My family and I have been gathering slowly this season, and spreading our natural decorations throughout our house. Take a walk around your yard or neighborhood and bring home some of these awesome natural decorations to add charm and simplicity to your Christmas season.
Pine Cones As Christmas Decorations
My boys love to pick up pine cones up by the dozen and sit them in bowls around the house. We keep our pine cones natural, but you can paint them with glue and add glitter, spray them with fake snow or dip them in paint if you want more color. A bit of string and some hot glue and you can add pine cones to your Christmas tree.
I found a tutorial on making scented pine cones as well that I plan on trying this weekend. One of my favorite things to do with pine cones is make a garland like the one in the photo above. I take twine and hot glue it through some of the pine cone layers, then we string it up in our window for the rest of the winter. This year, we’ve added some cinnamon dough ornaments we made, and a cross my oldest fashioned from two pieces of wood and tied together with yarn. It’s quite lovely, as you can see, and I plan to keep it up all winter.
