There’s nothing quite like missing a few days of gardening, especially this early in the season when everything is growing so fast. When I’m out there every day I don’t notice the growth so much. I went out this evening to make sure I didn’t need to water and wow! And being late in the evening the sun was hitting the leaves just right.
This same phenomenon is true with my kids. When I go away for a few days and return home I find them all grown up. Not entirely of course, and not usually physically, but the little one will be saying new words or the older one will have grasped a new concept or matured in some way I wouldn’t have noticed had I been with him during that time. Sometimes I mourn that I missed those moments, but then I wonder, if I’d been here, would I have noticed them? We tend to live such busy lives that we miss a lot of the tiny things that happen in the present.
On my most recent business trip I read The In-Between: Embracing the Tension Between Now and the Next Big Thing by Jeff Goins and it really challenged me to live in the present, to savor the in-between moments when we’re usually just waiting for the next big thing. Just because what’s happening now isn’t causing an adrenaline rush or promising a life changing outcome, doesn’t mean these in-between moments aren’t precious steps in the process of life. And boy is it hard to slow down. I’m nowhere near slow, but I’m learning to put the brakes on now and then and just enjoy the moments, especially those with my family.
I’m working harder to snuggle up to read stories in the middle of the day, push the kids on the swing, take them to the park even when I need to work, and make pancakes for breakfast just because.
Oh, just making chocolates…
It’s been a really crazy week, and since we’re not harvesting anything except jalapenos and basil I haven’t done much preserving this week. But, I did come across a recipe for making your own dark chocolate bar in less than 5 minutes and I had to try it!! Susan’s recipe uses natural ingredients (just 3 of them!) and includes coconut oil which excited me because we eat so healthy around here that I’m usually having to try hard to get some healthy fats into our diets. Especially mine. So, now I can do that while enjoying my favorite treat, dark chocolate! I like them as-is, but I’m eager to try again with some coconut flakes, nuts and other goodies!
