Up until this year, I’ve been lucky. My dad has always cooked Thanksgiving Dinner. I’ve been responsible for sides, but never the two main Thanksgiving essentials: the turkey and the dressing. Up until now. My dad injured his hand pretty seriously yesterday, and cooking is out for him. And my aunt, our backup… she broke her foot. Sooooo, I’m making Thanksgiving for at least 20 people and ya’ll, I am a little nervous. I’ve never done all of this by myself. I’ve helped making dressing before, made other sides but I’ve never cooked a turkey. My dad will be there holding my hand, though, so it should be fine. I hope.
In the mean time, I wanted to share my family’s tried and true, simple southern dressing recipe. There are no major bells and whistles here but most of the ingredients come from pantry/kitchen staples, so it’s a great from-the-stockpile recipe. I consulted both my aunt and my dad on ingredient amounts and I’ve helped make dressing for years. They both laughed when I asked for quantities of each ingredient but I managed to nail some down to more than “just until it looks right” for you.
