It’s that time of year! Christmas trees, gifts under the tree, Santa Claus, gingerbread houses and Christmas carols are just around the corner. It’s the “most wonderful time of the year.”
Or, if you’re like me, you’ve waited and waited and now you are thinking about all of those gifts that you want to make. Yes, make. I love to gift homemade gifts but it seems like every year, my time gets smaller and smaller to make these gifts for my family.
I have five nieces. Yep, five of them. This year, I’m thinking scarves! Luckily, I found plenty of free easy patterns for sewing a scarf!
Infinity Scarf
Infinity scarves are all the rage right now. Here’s a pattern to sew an infinity scarf which I think will be perfect for my teenage nieces. There’s also this pattern that teaches you how to sew a ruffled infinity scarf.
Fleece scarves
Fleece is perfect for quick sewing projects. You don’t have to sew the sides of fleece because it doesn’t unravel. This fleece fringe scarf would be adorable for younger girls. I’m also seeing a lot of fleece scarves on websites like Old Navy that are nothing but a strip of fabric with slits cut at each end for the fringe!
Flannel Scarves
The idea of a flannel scarf seems so snuggly and warm. All you need for this one is: 3 Pieces of Fleece: 5″ wide by 60″ long – fleece isn’t terribly expensive, or hard to find – Amazon carries many different patterns and colors of fleece (Amazon), so pick the ones you like best!
I can’t wait to make this gathered flannel scarf. Its so simple and elegant. Here’s another free pattern for a simple, cozy flannel scarf from designer Amy Butler.
More Ruffles
I just love this ruffled scarf pattern here and this faux ruffle scarf here. Both are perfect for winter or for spring! There’s also this free sewing pattern for an Ann Taylor copycat ruffled scarf that starts with a ready made scarf!
No Sew Scarves
And if you’re not a sewer, then this no-sew scarf pattern is the one for you! And again, the fleece scarves similar to what I’m seeing in Old Navy can be no-sew as well! You may also want to try this Smashed Flower Scarf! It’s a perfect gift for mom for grandma from the kids.

Thank you for the wonderful information on this page. I just found out both of my sewing machines are needing a trip to the hospital and I want to make scarves for my grandsons.
I’ll be hand sewing some flannel for them and Christmas is so close!
Your projects are beautiful.
