Sure, it’s easy to open a container of frosting and slather it on a cake, but how healthy is that? I’ve come across some ways to decorate cakes in a healthier manner. I’ve also found a few delicious recipes for frosting and ganache that you might find to be healthier alternatives to some you’ve been using.

Dried or Fresh Fruit

Fruit comes in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, which enables you to tap into your creative side. Cut a round cake in half, so you have two semi-circles. Gather an assortment of fruit and line slices onto the cake to create a beautiful rainbow. There are also cake pans in the shape of a butterfly, which could be decorated with bits of dried or fresh fruit to create colorful wings. A round cake can be decorated to look like a giant flower using blueberries in the middle and orange slices all around the outer edge of the circle of blueberries. The possibilities are endless!

Edible Flowers

Choose from a number of edible flowers to use as decorative cake toppings. It’s best to use edible flowers, just in case someone assumes they are edible and decides to devour them. Sugared violets are a popular topping. If you aren’t able to get a hold of live flowers, you could always opt for a selection of silk flowers instead. Be sure to remind people they aren’t to eat.

Piping Options

I love making designs with colored piping. Unfortunately, most piping is made from a super sugary substance. I’ve found softened cream cheese can be tinted and piped onto cakes, creating the same beautiful effect. It’s best on carrot cake, but I’ve used it on chocolate cupcakes and it was still yummy. Another option is to use whipped cream. It works best with large decorating tips and on a cake that doesn’t turn funky if put in the fridge. Some cakes become very dry when refrigerated.

Frosting Ideas

Coffee Fudge Frosting from Chocolate-Covered Katie. Simply combine all the ingredients in a blender or food processor and you’ve got yourself some rocking frosting!

Greek Yogurt and Peanut Butter Frosting from Sally’s Baking Addiction. Scroll waaaay down the page to find the recipe. It’s there! I promise! It’s a great protein-rich frosting that kids are bound to love.

Tip: Want to make a cake that doesn’t need icing?
Try this Rocky Road Crock Pot Cake.

Ganache

Dairy-free Chocolate Ganache from Elana’s Pantry. You can’t have a list of cake decorating options without having ganache on it! All you need are some chocolate chunks, coconut milk, and a little bit of heat to melt them both together.

I hope these suggestions and ideas help you come up with some glorious decorating ideas for a healthy way to decorate cakes.
