Despite our best efforts, we’ve all overdone it in the sun at one point or another!

When you find yourself with a burn, slather on this soothing and healing homemade after sun lotion recipe.

Shelf Life: 6 months—1 year

Benefits: Aloe works in a number of ways to soothe sunburn. It helps with the pain, swelling, and inflammation associated with sunburns.

It’s also full of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements that can help to repair damaged skin, and contains polysaccharides, which help to repair damaged skin cells and trigger the growth of new ones.

Witch hazel contains tannins, which help to soothe and heal inflamed skin.

Peppermint oil is actually a natural painkiller and helps to add a cooling sensation to burnt skin. Vitamin E oil contains antioxidants, which help to speed up healing.

Tips and Tricks: There are lots of very effective natural sunburn treatments. In addition to the above lotion, some of our favorites include:

Taking a cool to warm (not hot!) bath with 1—2 cups of one of the following: white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, milk, baking soda, cucumber juice, or oatmeal.

Making a 1:1 spray of apple cider vinegar to water, or applying the vinegar directly to burn using a cotton pad.

Making a cold compress with milk or grated potato.

Variations: Other great essential oils for sunburn are lavender, tea tree, chamomile, and geranium.
